In torrents, excessive or poorly managed vegetation can hinder the flow of water and encourage blockages during episodes of heavy rain.

Faced with this reality, the Forestry Department of Fundació Natura Parc works on vegetation management using different techniques, including controlled grazing with animals.

Donkeys and other herbivores feed on part of the vegetation in these areas, progressively reducing biomass and helping to keep strategic areas under control without having to rely constantly on heavy machinery.

It is not simply a matter of “clearing” the woodland. It is about managing vegetation in a planned way to make the land more resilient.

A traditional practice for today’s challenges

Grazing has been part of the Mediterranean landscape for centuries. Today, techniques linked to silvopastoralism and agroforestry management make it possible to recover this relationship between animals and the land and to use it as a complement to other prevention work.

Fundació Natura Parc has a long track record in this field. For more than a decade, our Forestry Department has been carrying out work in forest areas, firebreak strips and torrents, using methods that seek to reduce the impact on the environment.

One of the most recent projects is taking place in the Biniaraix torrent, in Sóller, where donkeys help control the vegetation during the months leading up to the rainy season. Their grazing gradually reduces part of the vegetation growing in the streambed and lessens the need for intensive mechanical interventions.

The management of these areas is particularly important in the face of heavy rainfall. Keeping watercourses properly maintained and preventing build-ups that could cause blockages helps water flow through and reduces certain risks associated with flash floods.

In forest areas, the principle is similar: less combustible biomass in strategic places can help reduce the spread of fire and make prevention and firefighting work easier.

A second chance that returns to the land

This model also has a fundamental dimension for Fundació Natura Parc: the welfare and recovery of the animals.

Some of the equids taking part in these programmes come from situations of abandonment or surrender. After their recovery, and always under professional supervision, they can join groups where they once again develop the natural behaviours of their species: roaming, grazing, interacting with other individuals and living in open spaces.

In this way, the animals get a second chance while taking part in a land management model based on the natural use of resources.

Their welfare is part of the project. The animals are monitored and cared for throughout the work, and each grazing area and period must be adapted both to the needs of vegetation management and to those of the animals themselves.

A cycle that makes sense again

For generations, extensive livestock farming helped shape the Mediterranean landscape. The transformation of the land and the gradual abandonment of certain traditional uses have changed that relationship.

Recovering some of these practices, now supported by technical knowledge and conservation criteria, allows us to tackle today’s problems using processes that nature itself has been developing for thousands of years.

The animals feed on the vegetation. Biomass decreases. Reliance on machinery for certain tasks is reduced. The areas remain managed, and the recovered animals find a new way of life.

A simple, renewable cycle based on working with nature, not against it.

Faced with ever-higher temperatures, prolonged dry spells and episodes of intense rain, adapting the way we manage the land will be a fundamental part of prevention.

At Fundació Natura Parc we will keep working to find the balance between animal welfare, ecosystem conservation and protection of the land.

Because caring for our forests and our torrents is not just about acting when an emergency arises. It also means working all year round to try to prevent it.

Fundació Natura Parc has been working for more than a decade on the management of forest areas and sensitive zones through controlled grazing with animals, recovering traditional practices and adapting them to the current needs of land conservation.
