At Fundació Natura Parc, we work actively on the recovery, maintenance, and promotion of native Balearic breeds (such as the Porc Negre, the Gallina Mallorquina, the Me Mallorquí, or the Ca de Bestiar). Many of these species have been in danger of extinction due to changes in modern agriculture. Our goal is to guarantee their survival, promoting their immense biological, historical, and cultural value for our islands.

Animal genetic resources are among the most valuable and strategically important assets a country can possess, as they constitute a heritage of inestimable value. The Balearic Islands are rich in this regard, thanks to the great diversity of native species we have.
Our conservation plans go beyond breeding; we manage a germplasm bank and genetic resources to safeguard the DNA of breeds such as the Porc Negre, the Mallorcan cow, and sheep. This technical work, carried out alongside breeders’ associations and research centers, ensures biological diversity and protects our species against extinction risks or health crises, keeping an invaluable genetic heritage alive.
Native breeds possess a millennial adaptation to our climate and ecosystems, granting them a unique natural resistance to diseases and periods of scarcity. Promoting their breeding not only helps maintain the balance of the Balearic rural landscapes but also fosters a sustainable local development model and high-quality agricultural production that is less dependent on external resources and more environmentally friendly.
Preserving our breeds means protecting the identity of the Balearic Islands. Through initiatives like the “Concurs d’Aviram,” which we have organized since 2001, we strengthen the bond between society and the rural world. We promote responsible breeding and environmental education, ensuring that future generations understand and value these breeds not just as livestock, but as a fundamental pillar of our history and folk culture.
